Cambridge 12 – 55 Newmarket

Newmarket put in a very complete performance to overwhelm Cambridge in every phase of the game. The home side struggled to cope with the strong running of the Newmarket forwards and backs. The tone was set in the first minute as Dan Bristow collected the ball from the kick off and shook off tackler after tackler until brought down 10 metres from the line. From the subsequent scrum Chris Le picked up and proved unstoppable from short range. Joe Stafford kicked the first of his five conversions.

Newmarket quickly doubled their lead as a long kick from Stafford was chased down by fullback Toby Colletta. He disrupted the Cambridge attempt to re-gather the ball and forced a fumble that allowed Stafford to complete the move with the simplest pick up and score.

Following a short period where Cambridge had the upper hand, the backs got into their stride. Iain Moffat proved hard to stop and Nathan Buckle deserved a try for a powerful straight run from inside centre. However, when he was brought down, Le was on hand to pick up his second score. It looked as if the match was going to be almost entirely the second row show as first Bristow crashed over and then Le completed his hat trick following good work by Dan Downing. Newmarket went into the half-time break with a 31 point lead.

In the first half Newmarket had been quick to the tackle and had starved Cambridge of good quality ball. However, they were nearly caught out from the second half kick off. It was only bravery by Buckle on his own try line that stopped Cambridge retrieving the ball and scoring. From the subsequent penalty Newmarket were soon back in the opposition half. Jack Watson got close to the line but some great defence by Cambridge turned over the ball. They were slightly unlucky that their attempted clearance kick was charged down by Ethan Brown who showed admirable alertness to follow up and touchdown before the home defence could respond.

Despite the mounting scoreline, Cambridge were far from done. With their backs tending to run across the pitch rather than straight, they had struggled to make much impression in open play and had made it easy for the Newmarket wings Moffat and Gwilym Davies to close them down with some solid tackling. But the home side's quicker thinking resulted in two tries from tapped penalties following infringements by Newmarket close to their own line. Those proved to be their only scores and  sandwiched another Newmarket try. With Stafford taking every opportunity to put the home team on the back foot with long kicks, replacement Jack Felton proved adept at chasing them down on the wing. Buckle, Watson and finally Stafford then gave a master class in keeping the ball alive as the backs combined for the sixth try.

With the front row of Olly Sanusi-Bartlett, Downing and Tom Wills solid at the scrum and flankers Ben Jeacock and Ashley Reid disrupting Cambridge possession, Newmarket continued to secure plenty of ball and that continued when new recruit Charles Curtis came on for his first match. Scrum half Lewis Heap was controlling the pace of the game from the set pieces but it was Bristow who again proved unstoppable as he recovered the ball from the ruck and out-paced the defence to score under the posts.

Newmarket's final try was scored by Reid. A series of hand offs took him past the Cambridge defence to crash over the whitewash and bring the match to an end. It was deserved reward for an excellent all round performance that also brought him the man of the match award.

Cambridgeshire 27 - 14 Norfolk

Congratulations to Chris Le, Jack Watson, Joe Stafford and Aiden Cooper on being selected for the County.

Cambridgeshire withstood a late Norfolk rally to record a comfortable win at a blustery Davey Field. The pre-match downpour made us all feel grateful that Cambridge scrumhalf Noah was in the squad but mercifully the elements relented before kick off, allowing both sides to play some good rugby.

The question for the Cambs supporters was whether a team comprised of such fierce local rivals could gel when playing together. This question was answered in the affirmative immediately. From the kick off Norfolk shipped the ball to a strong running centre. He was smartly upended by his opposite number, Cambridge's Ryan Headington and the ball was expertly 'jackaled' by Shelford's Sam Jones. With possession turned over Cambs drove the length of the pitch and created an opening for Newmarket's Aiden Cooper to dive over by the post. Headington added the extra points from the conversion and Cambs were up and running and looking a well-drilled cohesive unit.

Buoyed by the early score Cambridgeshire were completely dominant in the first half. The pack were especially impressive. The front row of Curtis, Picton-Turbervill and Pratt dominated their much bigger opponents, winning several scrums against the head. The power and ball carrying ability of second rows Cooper and Le drove Norfolk backwards and the mobile back row unit of Giles, Walker and Dingwall was first to every loose ball.

More tries were inevitable - a flowing passing move made a try in the corner for left winger George Smith. Scrum half Harry Hitchcock burrowed over from a goal line ruck. Finally just before the interval Ryan Headington picked up a loose ball and ran powerfully through the Norfolk midfield to make the score 22-0.

The second half was a different story as Norfolk upped their intensity at the breakdown and started to get on top at the lineout. Their big pack started to make inroads round the fringes and they snatched a try from a ruck close to the Cambs goalline.

With possession much more even in the second half chances for Cambs were rarer. However Cambs skipper Sam Jones seized on a moment of disorganisation in the Norfolk defence to slip through a gap. A couple of outrageous dummies later Sam had outwitted the covering defenders and dived over the line to restore the twenty point margin.

Undaunted by this reverse Norfolk drove on, aided by the wind at their backs and an astute forward based game. The reward was another converted close range try which gave respectability to the scoreline.

Ultimately Cambs ran out 27-14 winners - but credit to both sides for playing good quality rugby in difficult windy conditions.

Newmarket 0 – 65 Diss

With key players away on County duty, Newmarket were slightly unfortunate to meet by far the strongest team they have faced this season. However, they could have no complaints about the result as Diss proved quicker, stronger and more determined in all phases of the game, and the home team put in a performance that was well below par.

Newmarket were always on the back foot and trying to make something from scraps of possession. The Diss forwards and backs ran hard and straight. While most of the Newmarket team made an occasional good stop, they could not stem the tide. The missed tackle count grew enormously and largely accounted for the six tries that Diss ran in during the first half.

After the turn around and playing with the slope and the wind, there were some signs that Newmarket might get back into the game. The forwards began to win their own ball at the scrum and play was kept in the Diss half. However, they never really threatened the Diss try line and the overall pattern of the game was quickly re-established as the visitors took advantage of tiring home legs to run in a further five tries.

Dan Bristow was awarded man of the match for Newmarket and a special mention is also due to Jack Felton for some brave tackling in his first match for the club. Recent recruits Tom Wills and Ashley Reid were awarded their club ties after the match.

Sunday 22nd November: Diss match confirmed

Match against Diss at home this Sunday is confirmed. 10am meet for 11am kick off.

Sunday, 15 November 2009

Peterborough 10 – 7 Newmarket

Much of the first half of this match was played in the middle third of the pitch as both teams struggled to dominate. The weight of Peterborough's pack was matched by the determination of the Newmarket forwards, with their captain, Jack Watson, leading by example to receive the man of the match award. Neither side was able to make good use of the ball and any opportunities that came to the backs were quickly snuffed out by their opposite numbers. It was no surprise that the game was scoreless at the break, though Newmarket were hampered by an injury to scrum-half Lewis Heap that ruled him out of the remainder of the match.

Newmarket started brightly in the second half and penned Peterborough near their own try line. With secure ball coming from the scrums, winger Iain Moffat was within metres of touching down on two occasions following charging runs by Joe Stafford and Nathan Buckle. The other Newmarket backs were equally committed with both Gwilym Davies and Tom Locke forcing turnovers in the tackle. However, failure to convert pressure into points cost Newmarket dear as Peterborough regained the ball near the halfway line and against the run of play their speedy outside centre sprinted clear for an unconverted breakaway try.

Newmarket responded strongly. Despite struggling with an injury, hooker Dan Downing and the props Tom Wills and Oliver Sanusi-Bartlett continued to secure loose ball that took them close to the home team's line. Peterborough did well to keep out a charge from Dan Bristow well-supported by Ben Jeacock and Ethan Brown, but as players were sucked in the ball came out to Buckle who straightened the line and laid it back for Stafford to crash over under the posts and notch up a two point lead.

It remained that way until the last play of the match. Facing a borrowed stand-in scrum half the Peterborough forwards were able to steal ball tapped back from the lineout. Twice they crossed the try line only to be held up by last-ditch Newmarket defence. On the second occasion the home side were awarded a penalty and this time Newmarket were unable to prevent the No. 13 from wriggling through for his second try and a narrow Peterborough victory.

Newmarket 14 – 14 Bury St Edmunds

Against a strong and so far undefeated Bury squad, Newmarket spent much of the match defending in their own half. Despite Bury frequently getting close to the line the Newmarket forwards scrapped hard to disrupt possession and the backs put in a series of try saving tackles.

It wasn't until the second half that Bury managed to cross the line from short range as they stretched the Newmarket defence from a five metre scrum. That added to the converted try scored by Bury in the first half.

When that first try went in it looked as if Newmarket would really struggle, but on the rare occasions when they were able to get on the front foot they looked very dangerous as both backs and forwards kept the ball alive. Following great link play Newmarket got very close to the Bury try line only be to be kept out. From a subsequent scrum Dan Bristow proved unstoppable, brushing off five players to crash over the line and end the first half with the match tied at 7 points each.

Newmarket started the second half in similar style and this time it was Chris Le who evaded the Bury defence to score under the posts. Newmarket retained the lead until the second Bury try was brilliantly converted from the touchline. In the last minute Bury thought they had snatched the match, only to see the score ruled out as the ball was not grounded.

Woodbridge 21 - 26 Newmarket

This was reported to be a fantastic performance by Newmarket in the driving rain.

21 points down at half-time, the match seemed already over. The second half proved an entirely different matter. Newmarket not only kept Woodbridge at bay but scored 4 tries (3 converted by Joe Stafford) to snatch victory.

Unfortunately no full match report or photographs are available for this fixture.

Newmarket 33 - 10 Saffron Walden

With four tries in the match one could be forgiven for thinking that this was entirely the Dan Bristow show. In fact, despite the excellence of the second row's performance, it was founded on  all round team play that was only spoilt by the high number of penalties conceded.

Although the initial kick off did not carry 10 metres Newmarket quickly had Saffron Walden pinned near their own line thanks to some slick running and passing between the backs. Stealing the ball  from a Walden lineout Bristow almost touched down, only to lose the ball over the line. However, the ball was quickly re-gathered by Newmarket from loose play and this time there was no stopping him.

Failing to gather the ball from the drop out, Newmarket found themselves on the back foot but strong defence allowed fly half, Joe Stafford, and inside half, Nathan Buckle, to make the first of a number of surging runs that cleared the danger. The two wings ,Tom Locke and Iain Moffat combined well to take the home side into Walden territory. The decision by scrum half, Lewis Heap, to take a quick tap penalty looked to have been the wrong option as he ran into a wall of defenders but, again, from the resulting scrum Bristow proved unstoppable.

Newmarket indiscipline in front of their own posts gave Walden the opportunity to reduce the arrears almost immediately. Two penalties in quick succession left them disorganised and unable to prevent a short range try by the inside half which was not converted.

End to end play meant that the home side were again within touching distance of the opposition line. Bristow could have scored himself but unselfishly passed to Gwilym Davies who gathered the low ball only to see it knocked from his hands by last-ditch defence when within inches of touching down.

Newmarket ended the half defending a series of tap penalties as they repeatedly failed to retreat ten metres. They gave up half the length of the pitch before, once again, the forwards disrupted Walden ball to give Stafford the opportunity to kick to touch and end the first half.

Early exchanges in the second half were all one way. Penalties from constant infringements by the Newmarket forwards joining the ruck from the side were tapped by Walden who made steady progress towards the line. However, just when it looked as if they were getting the upper hand, that man Bristow stepped in again and picked the ball up on his own 22 to outpace the defence and score under the posts.

Despite Newmarket going down to 14 men with a quarter of the match remaining. as Locke was forced to leave the field with illness, Bristow's fourth try followed very quickly as good running by Moffat and Stafford got Newmarket to within a few metres of the line to give him his shortest range chance of the day. Stafford converted all four tries.

However, the home side continued to make life difficult for themselves and a further series of penalties gave the Walden forwards a chance to pick and drive from a lineout for their second try.

There was just time for the Newmarket forwards to regain the ball from the kick off and this time it was Jack Watson who showed a blistering turn of speed to leave the Walden players trailing in his wake and complete the scoring.

Stafford received the man of the match award in recognition of the way in which he controlled the game. Special mentions also go to recent recruits Ashley Reid and Tom Wills for their all round contributions to the team's play.

Newmarket 17 - 7 Swaffham

From the outset Newmarket were up for the challenge with the forwards piling on the pressure. However a big Swaffham free kick from close to their own touch line caught Newmarket by surprise allowing Swaffham to break through and snatch an early lead.

Newmarket re-applied the pressure instantly and some good movement between Chris Lee and Oliver Sanusi Bartlett gave Daniel Bristow the opportunity to power throughthe Swaffham defence scoring the first Newmarket try with Joe Stafford converting.

Despite an explosive run from Jack Watson, and Daniel Bristow being tantalisingly close to getting his second try of the game, the score remained 7-7 at half time largely due to some excellent Swaffham tackling.

In the second half Newmarket were determined not to give Swaffham any chances with the majority of play being in the opponent’s half. Ben Jeacock came frustratingly close to scoring but shortly afterwards Daniel Downing powered his way through the Swaffham defence to get a well deserved try.

The remainder of the match followed a very similar course with some big driving by the Newmarket forwards allowing Daniel Downing to get his second try of the game setting the final score at 17-7 to Newmarket.

Huntingdon 19 - 7 Newmarket

Last season’s two meetings between these teams both resulted in narrow 2 point victories for Huntingdon. For three quarters of this match it looked as if the score would be equally close.  On a rock hard surface the game see-sawed back and forth as both teams tried to find some early season rhythm on a hot day.

After 15 minutes Newmarket broke the deadlock.  Inside centre, Nathan Buckle, gathered the ball from a scrum and ran straight and hard from 20 metres to touch down under the posts. Joe Stafford converted with a drop goal as the ball fell off the kicking tee with the Huntingdon forwards bearing down.

Huntingdon were always alert to the opportunity of a quick throw or penalty tap and after considerable pressure they drove over for an unconverted try.

Taking advantage of the good running conditions and full value for defensive kicks, the teams played end to end rugby for the first ten minutes of the second half without either being able to convert.  Gradually, though, too much loose ball given away by Newmarket and  strong running from the Huntingdon backs resulted in them scoring two quick tries. The final score perhaps not doing justice to how well-matched the teams were.

Sunday 19th April: Diss U13 Festival Report

Having not played any competitive rugby for a month, and with the squad joined by guest players from Ely RFC, it was not totally surprising that Newmarket got off to a slow start at the Diss Festival. The lack of match practice showed in the early games against Shelford and Colchester, with Newmarket conceding first four and then three tries without reply.

In a particularly high quality group, Newmarket next met Chelmsford who had gone undefeated all season. They threatened to run riot in the first half and scored two tries. However, in the second half Newmarket re-found some form and kept the opposition on the back foot to deny them any scoring opportunities.

Newmarket finally got on the score sheet in the fourth game against Sudbury, with Jack Watson breaking through from a tap penalty. Joe Stafford converted. A jinking run from Iain Moffat nearly put the tie to bed but he was bundled into touch just short of the line. In the meantime Sudbury managed to cross for two unconverted tries and just snatch the result.

With the timetable running very late, Newmarket moved straight into the final round robin match against Bishops Stortford. They were unable to raise their game again and, though, trying hard they lost the match to a brace of tries.

Although the results didn't go Newmarket's way it was a great event and thanks are due to Diss for the festival organisation and to the Ely players for making such a valuable contribution to the team.

No training or match: Sunday 22nd March

Just to confirm that there will be no training or match this Sunday.

Newmarket 5 - 57 Sudbury

In the absence of our own match report, I thought you might be interested in the one that Sudbury posted on their website, which I have reproduced below. Apart from confirming the final score, please see the phrase I have highlighted in bold.

"Sudbury travelling to sunny Newmarket, set out their stall early and were startled initially by the effectiveness of a large Newmarket pack. However once the initial barrage had been dealt with, they dominated once more the loose and contact areas. Excellent endeavour and speed to the breakdown didn't allow Newmarket to play their game and Sudbury settled into their rhythm imposing themselves and generally being a nuisance to the home team.

Scores were added at regular intervals as the Sudbury's backs were let loose from the steadily increasing quality ball that the forwards were producing. Combined with an effective defence and patience the ball was lost often by Newmarket when they took it into contact and thus a strong home pack were annulled as Sudbury always looked in control. Newmarket however continued to make a fist of it and scored a well taken try late into the second half to register that they were there to play and their heads never went down.

Despite the score line - which was not reflective of Newmarket's play - this was a good test for Sudbury as was anticipated. They now go into Sunday's Suffolk Cup Final against Colchester in fine shape."

Sunday 22nd March: Match cancelled

There will be no game next Sunday.

Training as usual on Tuesday and a decision on whether there will be training on Sunday.

Match Result: Newmarket not many - Sudbury quite a lot

I'm afraid the distraction of Gwilym's injury and the ambulance turning up meant that I didn't see the second half of the match or register the final score.

Well done to everyone for keeping going in a difficult match against excellent opponents. Particular mention to Dan Downing for getting the try and to Chris Le for setting it up.

The rearranged County Cup will be played next Sunday at Wisbech. This replaces the match against Swaffham at home. We will not, therefore, be doing kitchen duty.

Further details to follow.

Result: Newmarket 27 - 5 Ipswich

Despite being a man short, Newmarket had their best game of the season to comprehensively outplay a strong Ipswich side in every phase of the game. They consistently stole the ball at both scrums and lineouts, were always first to the breakdown, added great support play to strong individual runs, and tackled like demons. As a result Ipswich found it impossible to get on the front foot.

From the kick off Dan Bristow started and finished the move for the first try with storming runs that were supported by Aiden Cooper and Chris Le. The lead quickly doubled as Newmarket stole the ball at an Ipswich lineout and Dan Downing proved unstoppable from 15 metres.

Ipswich then took advantage of playing down the slope with some sensible kicking that forced Newmarket to give away a penalty inside their 22 metre line. Though not scoring immediately it gave Ipswich their only period of sustained pressure and a quick tap from a free kick allowed their backs to pull back a try just before half-time.

Straight from the re-start Newmarket restored their lead. Bristow recovered the ball from the kick off and Cooper charged to the line for a try converted by Oliver Green.

Even with a winger missing, the Newmarket backs proved absolutely solid in defence and quick to counter-attack. Joe Stafford forced Ipswich to retreat with tactical kicking and Toby Colletta at full-back was consistently reliable. However, the star of the show was Tom Locke whose hands appeared to be covered in glue as he repeatedly gathered the awkward ball and ran it back well over the gain line. It was one of his forays that brought Newmarket deep into Ipswich territory. Man of the match Cooper then terrorised the Ipswich ball carriers with a fantastic series of tackles that eventually led to a Newmarket scrum. Ignoring the coaches' cries to get the ball out to the backs, scrum-half Lewis Heap jinked through the defence to claim his first try of the season.

There was just time for the match to end as it began with Dan Bristow gathering the ball near the Ipswich 22 and running virtually untouched to the corner for his second try.

Wth only 10 players available due to school holidays, Newmarket played a series of short matches against Stowmarket.

Stowmarket 7 - 19 Newmarket

Newmarket's forwards dominated the game with Dan Bristow (2) and Liam John running in tries converted by Oliver Green. Stowmarket's winger then picked up the ball following a mistake by Newmarket to run in a try under the posts.

Stowmarket 5 - 7 Newmarket

The game started wih Newmarket's forwards driving the play upfield where Aiden Cooper drove over for a try. Oliver Green added the conversion. The home side's defence prevented Newarket adding more tries before a turnover allowed Stowmarket to cross the line to score.

Stowmarket 5 - 12 Newmarket

Stowmarket started as they left off but it was Newmarket's Dan Bristow who crossed the line for a try. Stowmarket forced the game into Newmarket's half and with good hands drove over the line to score with no conversion. Newmarket came back with Ethan Brown running over.

Newmarket 53 - 7 Royston

A shortage of players made life difficult for Royston. Even with 3 Newmarket loan players bolstering their side they still struggled and the home side ran in 9 tries.

Newmarket should have scored from the first play of the match but the ball was spilled over the try line. Instead they scored from the second play when Nathan Buckle touched down following a strike against the head at Royston's scrum. They scored again straight from the kick off with Dan Bristow charging half the length of the pitch and followed that up with a further try from the fourth play. This time Jack Watson weaved his way through the defence to finish under the posts and provide Oliver Green with a straightforward conversion.

Royston immediately returned the compliment. Turning over the ball near the opposition line Newmarket forgot to tackle and Royston's speedy fullback raced the length of the pitch for their only try of the match. Their celebration was short-lived, though, as good passing between backs and forwards allowed Dan Downing to restore the score margin.

The Newmarket forwards continued to show deadly running skills every time they gathered the ball in their own half and soon extended the lead with the first of Chris Le's three tries. Just before half time the ball found its way out to the wing and offered Dylan Allan a rare opportunity to stretch his legs. Tackled 10 metres out the ball popped to Aiden Cooper who touched down in the corner.

So that's where linesmen keep their flags
A re-shuffle of the loan players and an injury to Gwilym Davies meant that Newmarket started the second half with players in unfamiliar positions. It took a while for them to re-establish their dominance. However, Le was soon over the line again and Green added the second of his four conversions. Royston continued to impress with their never say die attitude and loanee Thomas Locke, playing in unfamiliar colours, took them close to the Newmarket try line. Despite having a 5 metre scrum they couldn't get over the whitewash and Liam John stole the ball to clear the danger.

For five minutes the contest swung to and fro with good Royston runs being snuffed out by determined Newmarket tackling especially from Cooper, and backs Ian Moffat and Connor Huckin. And it was the backs who set up the next try with scrum half Lewis Heap slipping the ball to Moffat who put Le in again under the posts.

The match finished pretty much as it began. Royston's re-start didn't go the 10 metres and from the resulting scrum Buckle picked up the ball and carved his way to the try line.

It was a convincing Newmarket win against gallant but seriously depleted opponents, but one in which individual skills were more apparent than teamwork.
